[ ELIGIBILITY ]
Who may enter?

What kinds of projects are eligible?
Click here for a list of categories. Click here to read about the selection of winners.
Can I enter a project that was entered in the 2010 competition?
Yes. The only stipulations are that it did not receive an award and it must have been completed after June 1, 2009.
Can I enter a project that has won other awards or been published previously?
Yes, as long as it did not receive a Remodeling Design Award and was completed after June 1, 2009.
Do you accept entries from outside the United States?
Yes. Entries from outside the U.S. are welcomed.
Can I submit a project that was previously submitted for CotY or Chrysalis awards?
Yes, you can submit those projects in their CotY or Chrysalis binders, but you’ll still need to complete our registration process and submit it using our entry forms.
[ CATEGORIES ]
Do I have to indicate the cost of the project?
Yes, but note that actual project cost will not be published. Besides entering your project in the appropriate cost category (see below), we ask that you indicate the actual cost of the project to help the judges evaluate its cost-effectiveness. This cost should include actual size of remodeler’s contract, including all materials, subcontractor work, and change orders. If relevant, please indicate any costs excluded from the contract, such as appliances, landscaping, painting, etc.

What if my project fits multiple categories?
Enter your project in the category you believe to be most appropriate. If the judges feel your entry belongs in another category, they will switch it to that category during judging. (However, judges will not move entries/portions of entries into the Craftsmanship/detail category.) Your entry will not be penalized.
Can I enter the same project into more than one category?
Yes, but you will be charged for each category you enter. Many entrants do this when they have a whole-house project that is also an historically sensitive renovation. Often these large projects also have a kitchen or bathroom that is entered in the kitchen or bathroom categories.
[ HOW TO ENTER ]
Click here to complete the entry form and pay applicable fees for each entry using a credit card. The deadline for online registration is May 2, 2011. Your completed binder must be received at Hanley Wood offices by May 16, 2011. Entry fees will not be refunded after May 24, 2011.
Upon registering online, you’ll be e-mailed a confirmation letter, an entry number, binder information, instructions for organizing your entry, and entry forms. You will need to purchase a binder for each entry. (Suggested binders can be found at Office Depot, item #464586; or Staples, item #392533.) Enclose a SASE if you’d like your binder returned.
The judging is entirely confidential. Other than the Participant Information Sheets that you will submit with your entry, please do not include the name/s of your company or any individuals on any images or other materials to be judged.
[ PHOTO REQUIREMENTS ]
How many photos do I include with my entry binder?
Submit at least two (2) "before" photos (preferably more) that depict the scope and nature of the area that was remodeled, including the home’s exterior, if relevant. "Before" shots may be submitted in any format, including snapshots and black & white.
For most projects, submit at least four (4) professional-quality "after" prints. For bathroom remodeling or craftsmanship/details entries, submit at least three (3) "after" prints. "After" prints must be color, professional quality, and at least 8 x 10 inches in size (not to exceed 8.5 x 11 inches). Please also provide simple photo captions, to clarify the judges’ understanding of what they’re seeing.
You may include more photos if you wish. All photos must also be scanned at 300 dpi and be sent on a CD as well. See below.
Again, please do NOT include the name/s of your company and/or any individuals on your photos. Label photographs with your entry number.
Do I need to include hi-res digital images with my binder?
Yes. You must also provide reproducible, high-resolution project photos on a CD. Images should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi in RGB mode. Raw files are preferred, but TIFF format is fine. Do not compress files or make color corrections. Images should be at least 5x7 inches. Please insert the CD into a protective envelope and place in the last sleeve of the binder. Label the CD with entry number and category. Please do NOT use plastic cases, as they will fall out of the binder.
Can I submit color copies instead of prints?
You may, although we discourage it. These images are the judges' primary means for evaluating each entry, so color copies must be clear, high-quality images that accurately convey a project's important features.
Can I use photographs I took myself?
Only if they are professional-quality photographs that can be reproduced for publication. We suggest that you refer to previous winners or see our October 2010 issue, which can also be found online at www.remodelingmag.com, for an idea of the standard of photography required.
Who owns the publishing rights?
Images of winning projects will be used only in conjunction with the design awards, and may be published in REMODELING magazine and in a collection of award-winning designs; posted on www.remodelingmag.com; and published in marketing materials for future Remodeling Design Awards. All other uses will require the photographer's express permission.
What should I do if my photographer will not sign the release form?
Photographers are welcome to clarify the language or provide their own release. Images of winning projects will be used only in conjunction with the design awards, and may be published in REMODELING magazine and in a collection of award-winning designs; posted on www.remodelingmag.com; and published in marketing materials for future Remodeling Design Awards. All other uses will require the photographer's express permission.
Can I submit the binder without the photo release form?
Binders should be submitted with all completed forms as required. If there is a delay with the photo release form, you may submit your binder and then fax, mail, or e-mail that form separately, when completed. Your entry will not be penalized if the photo release form arrives after the binder deadline date.
[ PLANS / DRAWINGS ]
Do I have to submit plans or drawings?
Yes. Your entry must include before-and-after plans, elevations, or other drawings sufficient to illustrate the scope of the project. Floor plans should be presentation-style and labeled with room dimensions. Plans and drawings should not exceed 8.5 x 11 inches.
[ SELECTION OF WINNERS ]
How are winners selected?
A panel of respected remodeling and design professionals will review all entries. They will select as many Grand and Merit award winners as they deem appropriate; there is no minimum or maximum number of awards in each category. The judges will also choose one project as Best of the Year.
What are the judging criteria?
Judges will not know who completed the projects or anything about the clients. They will select winning entries based on:
- strength of design ideas
- aesthetic and market appeal
- sensitivity to existing structure
- compatibility with the neighborhood
- functional value
We strongly suggest that you address these attributes in the project statement (one of the forms that you will receive upon registration) and with the images you submit.
What are the criteria for the Green Remodeling category?
Judges with expertise in the area of sustainable remodeling will review these entrants. They will use the same criteria as those listed above, along with these criteria:
- designed with minimum waste
- maximizes reclaimed and recycled material
- maximizes renewable products and techniques
- maximizes energy performance
- maximizes water efficiency
- minimizes the use of virgin materials
- creates healthy indoor air quality
We strongly suggest that you address these attributes in the project statement (one of the forms that you will receive upon registration) and with the images you submit.
Are there winners in every category?
Not necessarily. Judges have wide discretion in choosing whether entries in a category should be awarded. Invariably, some categories attract a far greater number of entries than others and go on to produce several awards. Likewise, some categories may produce no winners.
Are winners selected based on location?
No. Invariably, and for reasons that we cannot control or even explain, we receive more entries from some parts of the country than others. We welcome projects from the United States and abroad.
When will the winners be announced?
Judging will take place in June 2011. Winners will be notified by REMODELING editors, and the full list of winners will be posted online in September 2011.
How will the winning projects be featured?
All winning projects will be featured in the September 2011 issue of REMODELING and on www.remodelingmag.com. A select number of winners also will be featured in lengthier articles throughout the year.
The winner of the Best of the Year Award will receive two passes to the Remodeling Show exhibit area.
