Remodeler Scott Chatel uses a temporary agency to provide carpenters during peak seasons. “It's a helpful way of being able to staff during peak times. It's good to bring someone on for a week and let them go — there is no long term commitment,” Chatel says.
The president of Chatel Contracting in Deer Park, N.Y., says he never panics during a busy period because Construction Force reacts quickly to his needs. “I could call today and speak to my rep, and he would get me set up on who I could have for tomorrow,” Chatel says.
Because the agency takes care of worker's compensation and liability, he does not have that additional increase on his books. He says if he includes labor burden on his existing employees, the agency fee is comparable to the cost of his crew. Also, the agency invoices the company, so Chatel does not have to pay right away, which helps cash flow.
The agency usually provides finish carpenters who have their own equipment and transportation. The workers need close supervision at first, but once they are familiar with how the company works, they can be a strong asset to the crew. “We've brought a few on board as full-time employees —one that is still with us as a lead carpenter,” Chatel says.
