After parting ways with his business partner of 10 years in a successful design/build company, architect Todd Miller established  QMA  as a traditional general contracting company. QMA subcontracts all its labor, which offers Miller “enormous flexibility.” Now he is the liaison between sales, design, and construction; his wife, architect Jeannette Quon (the “Q” in QMA), focuses on design.

For their office, Miller took a chance on a former dental office in a storefront on the first floor of a beachfront highrise in their Jersey Shore community. He discovered 16-foot spaces under the drop ceiling and 14-foot–high street-facing windows, which he put to good use featuring giant LCD screens showing a continuous slide show of QMA’s work and its many awards.

Miller doesn’t bid jobs and takes only five or six large jobs a year, which helps keep overhead low.
