“The Dans,” as general manager Bob Carroll refers to Matarozzi and Pelsinger, were a “surfer and a lit major” who met when each was doing carpentry. The still laid-back pair found a niche in the small, high-end San Francisco remodeling world. The business’s success relies heavily on positive connections between clients and employees, which result in referrals for new work.
The principals are “completely accessible to everybody,” Carroll says, and there is a high level of empowerment among employees. “We hire intelligent and capable people,” he adds. All work is open-book, with every stakeholder in the project given access to information — from purchasing to bids to implementation.
Their new headquarters, which won a REMODELING Design Award in 2010, recently was named by the American Institute of Architects as one of the top 10 green projects in the nation.
