After Hurricane Fran hit in 1996, the builder that John Sperath worked for asked him to head a remodeling division. Sperath later purchased the division, which becameBlue Ribbon Construction.
Six hurricanes later, the housing storm has really affected business. “Our customer base has found they can’t move, but they also don’t want to move. They love their neighborhoods,” Sperath says. The company stays busy with additions, kitchens, and master suites, and Sperath vigorously supports aging-in-place remodeling.
“My generation isn’t going to age gracefully,” he says. “Even if we don’t need wheelchairs, our friends may. If we can’t visit each other, we become isolated. That will make CAPS very mainstream.”
