A construction technology degree and experience working for a contractor on oceanfront mansions gave Ken Kumph (wearing tie) the confidence to start his business in 1986. His meticulous trim work and connection with architects (the source of 70% of his work) led him to million-dollar jobs.
But the little touches have kept him there: His crews carry medical booties to wear whenever they enter a house.
Recently, the company started doing construction management.
Kumph began delegating key duties 12 years ago, and he works closely with consultants and a business coach to fine-tune processes. One team brainstorming resulted in 130 topics, now being addressed one by one.
Kumph rewards his employees with at least a week's pay as a year-end bonus. His business systems extend to presenting exhaustive spreadsheet pricing to detail-minded clients.
This remodeler loves his work, but he also finds time to coach his daughter and two sons in athletics.
