The deteriorated rear of the house, a 20-foot section, was replaced with a three-and-a-half-story addition encompassing a master suite on the second floor and, on the first, a new kitchen, family room, breakfast room, side porch, and butlery, as well as a relocated powder room.

Rooms are compartmentalized, as dictated by tradition, but openings were carefully arranged to create a sense of openness throughout. Wainscoting and various materials and casework echo details from the original house. The breakfast room's art glass window was relocated from elsewhere in the orignal house.

Non-original French doors were removed from the opening between the foyer and parlor, and the opening was restored. Other restored elements included tile fireplace surrounds, windows, flooring, and decorative stencil.

Architect David Heide designed the benches and fireplace surround for the family room addition.

Challenge: To seamlessly incorporate modern amenities and create inviting, functional spaces in an 1892 Queen Anne. The four-story addition and renovation includes new mechanicals and refinishing of all surfaces. Key details: Replicated original wainscot; restored historic elements; custom-designed cabinetry, lighting, and trim work. Judging notes: “A really artful project.” “Beautiful.”
